Before you write your sales resume, know the facts:
Nearly every occupation you can think of needs sales people. Sales jobs are one of the most common types of jobs out there, and are vital to the growth of a business. Not all sales jobs are created equal. Just because someone can sell electronics at a big box store or life insurance doesn’t mean they can sell capital or durable medical equipment, commercial advertising space, or luxury vacation homes.
DEFINE THE TYPE OF SALES POSITION YOU ARE SEEKING:
IT / Sales
Real Estate Sales
DO YOUR RESEARCH TO IDENTIFY WHAT THE POSITION IS ABOUT
Occupational Outlook Handbook
DO AN INVENTORY OF YOUR SKILLS & THE REQUIREMENTS
Go down the list and check off the items you are experienced in.
Cross reference what you checked off with the requirements. Fold a sheet of paper and number your lists evenly. Then draw lines linking items from column A with items from column B.
Note that the information breaks down into skills and actual experience. Good communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of an organization do not fall under experience. It belongs under your summary or profile.
Start back at the top and expand on each item with specifics. For example, if you checked off“Must have experience coordinating product implementation at client sites,” you need to write down at least three projects that you handled and what they were about.
The group of detailed projects / implementations can be listed under a sub-category called Special Projects or along with non-project related accomplishments under a sub-category called Selected Contributions or Selected Accomplishments or Key Achievements or any variation of these. There are many more out there, but these are the most used.
If you check off “Must have experience planning and tracking large-scale budgets” you need to write a sentence with details such as “Develop and control a $1.2 million dollar annual budget allocated to employee salaries and sales training initiatives.”
Be careful to include sales jargon such as prospect, target, solicitation, list building, lead generation, account management, ROI, contract negotiations, client relationship building, consultative selling, strategic sales planning, sales reporting, territory opening, etc.
Here are some sample sentences & key words:
Consistently exceeded company sales goals by __% or greater.
Improve bottom line performance through strategic sales of _______ for ____________ clients in the _____ industry.
Head the entire sales cycle from point of lead to agreement; hold a current record of __% close ratio.
Continually evaluate and restructure _______ processes to drive ______.
· Client Relationship Management
· Territory Growth Management
· Sales Planning & Management
· Multimillion-Dollar Contract Negotiations
· High-Impact Sales Presentations
Always indicate what the products and services are, the type of clients, and your sales achievements using dollars and percentages.
